内容記述 Human trafficking is a pressing global issue and the target of three Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), and SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions). Anti-trafficking policies have been designed to address global human trafficking, urging states to enforce measures against human trafficking at the national, regional, and transnational levels. Consequently, identifying trafficked people and complying with anti-trafficking policies have become major tasks of all states/governments seeking to eliminate trafficking. Considering the role of institutions in eliminating trafficking and their influence on the politico-socio-economic root causes of the problem, this study empirically investigated the influences of domestic institutions on the three key areas of human trafficking: trafficking reduction, the identification of trafficked people, and states’ compliance with anti-trafficking policies. This study used an institutional approach and incorporated political and economic risk indices following empirical investigations. A logit model, a two-step system generalized method of moment, and an ordered probit model were employed to measure human trafficking, victim identification, and country compliance, respectively. The study used data from reliable sources—U.S. Department of State’s TIP and UNODC—for human trafficking and reported victims of trafficking for 113 countries in 2003–2021 and for compliance TIP Tier rankings data for 131 countries in 2003-2023. The results indicate that political institutions, economic institutions, institutional quality, and economic freedoms influence human trafficking negatively and significantly. Moreover, political and economic risk indices showed negative coefficients, indicating a reduction in human trafficking. Conversely, the empirical measurement for reported trafficking victims yielded positive coefficients, implying an increase in the identification of trafficked persons. Similarly, the study produced positive coefficients for institutional quality, the rule of law, economic freedom, property rights, political risk ratings, religious tensions, and country compliance with the anti-trafficking protocol. Therefore, the findings suggest that if domestic political and economic institutions, single institutional indicators, and economic freedoms improve simultaneously, SDG targets to eliminate global trafficking can be achieved more effectively.
