It utilizes a relatively new lexical richness measure, the Lexical Frequency Profile, which has been demonstrated to be stable across compositions on different topics written by the same author provided that there is some control over genre. While previous studies of lexical richness have mostly focused on free writing produced within particular EFL and ESL institutional settings by writers with low to high intermediate levels of linguistic proficiency, this study gathered its data from free writing produced within the public domain of a well-known standardized test, the Analytical Writing Assessment component of the GMAT, by writers whose linguistic proficiencies range from intermediate to native speaker levels. In this study, considerable support was found for Laufer and Nation's (1995) prediction that the Lexical Frequency Profile would be useful for helping to determine the factors that affect judgments of quality in writing. The study's main findings were that (a) at the lower to middle levels, the Profile's lexical richness statistics correlated significantly with holistic score ratings of writing quality and discriminated clearly among writers of differing language proficiency, and (b) at the highest levels of writing quality, these statistics suggested strongly that there exists a threshold level beyond which the trend for lexical sophistication to increase in tandem with writing quality is no longer self-evident.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Smith, Richard"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"767","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Smith, Richard","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"217","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-07-27"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"01_12_0001.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.5 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"01_12_0001","url":"https://iuj.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/613/files/01_12_0001.pdf"},"version_id":"77d5e3de-c041-4d7f-bacf-720f6a5b6d70"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Lexical richness and success in a standardized academic English writing test","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Lexical richness and success in a standardized academic English writing test"},{"subitem_title":"Lexical richness and success in a standardized academic English writing test","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"14","path":["287"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2001-03-01"},"publish_date":"2001-03-01","publish_status":"0","recid":"613","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Lexical richness and success in a standardized academic English writing test"],"weko_creator_id":"14","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-23T12:25:12.142229+00:00"}
