Fifty reading passages were randomly selecdted from an American public library andd made into thirty-item cloze tests by deleting every 12th word. The subjects were 2298 EFL students from 18 university level institutions in Japan. Each student took one of the 30-item cloze tests. The 50 cloze tests were randomly assingned across all of the subjects. Any differences between the cloze tests or the indeividual test items were therefore assumeddx to be due to other than sampling differences. The result was a set of 1500 item difficulty estimates (50 teats times 30 items). Each item was also analyzedd for linguistic characteristics, e.g., passge readability, number of words per sentence, frequencies of occurrence in passage(s), and others. Correlational, factor and multiple-regression analyses of the linguistic characteristics indicated that there were clear groupings among the variables and showed that linguistic characteristics can be used to account for up to 31 percent of the variance in item difficulties. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for cloze testing research.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Brown, James D."}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"891","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Brown, James D.","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"892","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-12-13"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"2011_3_iuj2_10.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.9 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"2011_3_iuj2_10","url":"https://iuj.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/821/files/2011_3_iuj2_10.pdf"},"version_id":"0c4f4f1c-d545-4611-8164-09bca3687f67"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"conference paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794"}]},"item_title":"WHAT TEXT CHARACTERISTICS PREDICT HUMAN PERFORMANCE ON CLOZE TEST ITEMS?","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"WHAT TEXT CHARACTERISTICS PREDICT HUMAN PERFORMANCE ON CLOZE TEST ITEMS?"},{"subitem_title":"WHAT TEXT CHARACTERISTICS PREDICT HUMAN PERFORMANCE ON CLOZE TEST ITEMS?","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10003","owner":"14","path":["297"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"1992-03-01"},"publish_date":"1992-03-01","publish_status":"0","recid":"821","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["WHAT TEXT CHARACTERISTICS PREDICT HUMAN PERFORMANCE ON CLOZE TEST ITEMS?"],"weko_creator_id":"14","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-23T12:20:28.515111+00:00"}
