Twenty-four Japanese learners of English at The Pennsylvania State University participated in this study. The subjects were divided into high and low proficiency groups based on their recent TOEFL scores. The subjects in each group were then matched according to thier scores and assigned either an English or a Japanese passage. The subjects read one of the two passages and indicated their agreement or disagreement with 28 statements about reading processes on a five-point Likert Scale. After statistical data analyses were conducted, significant differences were found in the reading processes of sounding out unfamiliar words and predicting the content of a passage between first and second language readers. High and low proficiency readers differed significantly in the reading processes of identifying familiar words and reading forward for further clarification.
